Atlanta Falcons’ Beadles, Lindstrom; Atlanta United’s Lagerwey headline First Tee’s inaugural Leadership Academy

Teens from across the U.S. will spend a week in PGA TOUR Superstore’s headquarters of Atlanta learning from Arthur M. Blank Family of businesses, civic and sports leader

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. and ATLANTA, GA. (June 19, 2023) – Youth development organization First Tee will host its inaugural Leadership Academy in partnership with PGA TOUR Superstore from June 19-23. The weeklong Atlanta event will bring together 48 teens from across the country who will learn about building and running a successful team.

First Tee uses golf as a vehicle through which to teach life skills and values. The nonprofit is collaborating with PGA TOUR Superstore and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation to host its inaugural Leadership Academy, which will feature workshops on cultivating authentic relationships, developing a winning culture and more. The Academy is taking place at various venues across the Atlanta area, including Atlanta Falcons Flowery Branch, Atlanta United Training Ground, Mercedes-Benz Stadium Georgia Institute of Technology, the Bobby Jones Golf Club and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Event highlights include:

  • Georgia Tech head women’s basketball coach Nell Fortner will share advice on achieving individual growth in a team setting during the opening keynote.
  • Atlanta Falcons President Greg Beadles will speak to participants before they explore the team’s Flowery Branch training facility.
  • Participants will hear from Atlanta United President/CEO Garth Lagerwey before attending a game to witness the team in action.
  • Mercedes-Benz Stadium executive Don Rovak will discuss the importance of supporting your team.
  • PGA TOUR Superstore President Jill Spiegel will address the teens at historic Bobby Jones Golf Club.
  • Participants will visit the National Center for Civil and Human Rights where Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom, the team’s 2022 Walter Payton Man of the Year, will deliver the closing address.

Initially envisioned by PGA TOUR Superstore executive Ralph Stokes, who leads the brand’s diversity, partnerships and community efforts, the event’s curriculum was developed by First Tee and an independent youth development expert. Stokes recently became the first Black president of the Georgia State Golf Association and was among the first Black players on the University of Alabama football team, where he played under legendary coach Bear Bryant.

“From playing team sports, I learned that no matter how great an individual player is, you will not achieve success on your own. The team is no stronger than the weakest link,” Stokes said. “Golf is largely an individual sport, but we felt it was important to collaborate with First Tee on this event because these kids are part of families, communities, clubs and eventually workplaces where they need to function within a team.”

For more than a decade, PGA TOUR Superstore and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation have championed First Tee’s mission through charitable and in-kind donations across the country. In September 2020, PGA TOUR Superstore announced a new grant that will help First Tee reach more kids across the U.S. and strengthen its curriculum for teenage participants, including the development of the Leadership Series, held locally at PGA TOUR Superstores across the country, and the Leadership Summit, which takes place in Emigrant, Montana. The new Leadership Academy in Atlanta is the latest installment in this exciting portfolio of events.

“Thank you to PGA TOUR Superstore and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation for their ongoing support of First Tee,” said First Tee CEO Greg McLaughlin. “This new Leadership Academy will provide young people with an amazing and impactful experience.”

The Leadership Academy is one of several national opportunities provided by First Tee Headquarters to inspire and equip teens on a deeper level as they progress through the program and toward higher education opportunities.

To be eligible to apply for the Academy, teens were required to participate in a five-week Leadership Series that was hosted at PGA TOUR Superstores across the country this past spring.

Volunteer Family Spotlight – The Lee Family

The Lee Family

In the spirit of National Volunteer Month, we would like to recognize the Lee family. Patrick, Jen, Jenson and Rosie have been a part of First Tee for 7 years. Each family member has a particular role as a volunteer including coaching, assisting with events and tournaments, and joining a team of parents to form our parent council.

We are extremely grateful to have an amazing family be a part of the First Tee – Orange County family and we look forward to many more years of their volunteer service.

COACH PATRICK

Pat picked up golf in his 30’s inspired by his late aunt who held multiple Ladies Champion titles at Hong Kong Golf Club. Pat met FTOC in 2015 at Roger Dunn and has been a committed coach since. Pat’s favorite part about FTOC is watching the participants grow and uncover their talents in golf and in life. In our pre-kids days, Pat had golf ball favors inscribed “Awesome Twosome” made for our wedding and dragged Jen out to play 9 holes every Saturday morning at 6am. Pat works as a computer and memory chip designer.

COACH JEN

Jen started learning golf in college and saw it pay off when she’d represent Deloitte to play in clients’ tournaments as a CPA. Jen’s extent of golf nowadays is through FTOC, but she does remember playing rounds even with Rosie in baby carrier on Jen’s back. Jen’s favorite part of FTOC is maintaining her reign as the ambassador who has recruited the most new participants and coaches. Jen runs a 501(c)3 charity focused on youth development and is currently starting a 4-week entrepreneurship summer camp geared for children.

COACH JENSON

Jenson (age 12) started learning golf at age 3 and has been in FTOC since age 4; he and Daddy fight over the latest issue of Golf Digest and are both glued to the TV during majors. Jenson is also an avid cellist, being recently chosen for Honors Orchestra. His favorite part of FTOC is serving as Junior Coach; he has rarely missed volunteer events, happily forgoing school carnivals and birthday parties to go coaching instead.

ROSIE

Rosie (age 10) started FTOC at age 2, when her golf bag was bigger than her and coaches fought to walk behind her and hold up her golf bag lol. Rosie served at senior center during her preschool days and is currently the youngest member of Saddleback Church’s Cardmaking Ministry. Her favorite part of FTOC is Girls Golf and the friendships she’s forged. Rosie is counting the days to be a junior coach when we’d finally have everyone in our family wearing FTOC red polos :-).

Welcome to our Board of Directors

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Well, for starters I’m a bit of a nomad. I’ve uprooted and moved 10 different times throughout the course of my life. I’m glad to call California my home but Texas is a close second as I spent a total of 10 years there. I attended undergrad at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas and, after trying out a career in sales, quickly made a transition to an industry I’ve always been fond of – Marketing & Advertising. I’ve been in that trade now for over 10 years. I peaked in terms of life accomplishments in 2016 when the love of my life, Stefanie, agreed to marry me. Today, we live in Costa Mesa, CA and have been blessed with two young boys – Brock (3) and Beau (1).

Can you tell us a little about your golf background?

My Dad encouraged me to give the sport a try from time to time as I was growing up, but that usually resulted in an annual round where the only thing higher than the numbers on the scorecard were the amount of golf balls lost in the woods. I’d routinely walk away discouraged and disinterested in picking up a club. It wasn’t until a few years after I had graduated college and moved back to Southern California that I began to get more interested in the sport. Today, I’m officially hooked. Instead of being frustrated by the game, I’ve developed the utmost respect for the time and commitment it takes to becoming proficient at it.

What does First Tee mean to you?

First Tee represents the wonderful intersection of a purpose driven organization focused on cultivating future generations and a sport I’ve come to respect and admire.

Can you tell us why you accepted the position to be a part of the FTOC Board of Directors?

I wanted to give back to my community, but more importantly, I wanted to give back in a way where my contributions would have a legacy. That’s what makes the First Tee really special to me. You have the ability to work with an organization that is going to influence future generations who will be able to turn around and do the same one day. It has the potential for infinite good, which really excites me.

What is your role at Chipotle and can you go into detail about our relationship with Chipotle?

I am the Senior Manager of Brand Marketing at Chipotle Mexican Grill. My primary focus is leading the management and execution of our new menu item innovation, while also working on many initiatives impacting our core menu offerings as well as our brand communications and advertising. I’ve been at the company for more than 4 years and have had the incredible fortune of leading the introduction of more than 10 new items to our menu, including the most successful LTO (limited time offer) in company history, Pollo Asado and a brand new line of 100% Organic Beverages through a partnership with Tractor Beverage Co. I’m very proud of the positive business impacts my programs have made for the organization as well as the delight they have brought our guests.

What would you like to accomplish during your tenure on the board?

I want to make an impact first and foremost. I believe that through leveraging my marketing background, I can help provide guidance that will lead to tangible results when it comes to improving brand awareness as well as increasing donor engagement and retention. If I succeed, I will hopefully leave the organization better than before I started.

What is your favorite core value/character building value that we teach at First Tee?

Growth through Challenge. I personally believe it is so important to embrace challenges, not shy away from them. This is something that did not come to me naturally when I was younger, nor did I find it easy to understand when my parents, coaches, or mentors tried to emphasize it with me. It was one of those life lessons that I had to consistently encounter before I finally understood how to deal with it and, in time, appreciate it. Once I discovered that inner strength, I quickly realized it is truly one of the richest gifts in life. It’s a difficult concept to grasp, so the more chances they have to be educated on its value, the better.

We’re very excited for Matthew to join our board and look forward to his contribution to First Tee – Orange County!
